Some Days
My lanyard
noisy with keys
is a cat bell
round my neck
I stalk the halls
cruise the rooms
announce, a jangle:
move along
hush
huddle there
fly away
little birdies

Some feedback I got made me go back to a small issue about this poem that I considered but didn't take action on: Is it a problem that I don't establish that I'm in a school early on? Should I mention teacher, classroom, something like that? Seems like it would muddle what I like to think of as a sleek little poem. Also, the word teacher (though essential to the meaning of the piece) maybe makes it too quaint in tone? (did that make any sense to anyone else?) Ah. I don't know.
ReplyDeleteI kind of thought "lanyard" put it enough into the institutionalized setting to make the point, teacher or not. ?? What do you think?
